According to reports of the SEOC, Bihar is facing a flood situation due to heavy to very heavy rainfall between September 26 and September 28, 2024 in Nepal, combined with the discharge of excessive water (approximately 600,000 cusecs) from the Birpur and Valmiki Nagar barrages into the Kosi, Gandak, and Bagmati rivers on September 28, 2024.
• The breach of 06-embankments within 24 hours on Sunday worsened the situation, causing the overflow of major rivers like the Kosi, Gandak, and Bagmati. Floods in these rivers, as well as the Mahananda, have affected 206 blocks across 16 districts, including East Champaran, Araria, and
Sitamarhi. Approx. 696,000 people across 1,206 villages have been impacted. Out of it, 3.34 L are estimated to be Children.
• In Sitamarhi district, embankment breaches in several blocks led to severe flooding. The affected population relocated to safer areas with the assistance of the district administration and rescue teams.
• The Central Water Commission (CWC) reported the Gandak, Bagmati, and Dhardha rivers currently flowing at their highest levels, while the Ganga, Burhi Gandak, Koshi, Adhwara, Kamlabalan, Mahananda, Parman, and Fulhar rivers are flowing above the danger mark. All major trans-border rivers of Bihar, inc. the Mahananda, Parman, Koshi, Kamla, Bagmati, Adhwara, Gandak, Burhi Gandak, Burhi Rapti, and Rapti, are experiencing severe flooding.
• 02 nos. of embankment breaches have been reported: Breach 01 on the Bagmati River in Sitamarhi district, affecting approx. 1,400 families, and Breach 02 on the Gandak River in Bagaha block of West Champaran district, affecting around 500 families. Despite these breaches, the two key barrages, Valmiki Nagar and Birpur, remain fully functional and open.
